Today's entry title is a quote from a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal (12/12/2009) written by Ken Beckrich from Elbert, Colo. I contacted Mr. Beckrich and asked his permission to reprint his excellent letter here, and he agreed. I couldn't agree with him more.
"I want to thank Roger Altman ("Dems Need a Mid-Course Correction" op-ed, Dec. 4) for making so clear what is wrong with our current system. To be fair, Republican strategists think exactly the same way, but Mr. Altman lays it out so plainly.
"In his article, not once does he consider what policies are the best for the country or its people. Instead, he is solely concerned with what window dressing will help Democrats stay in power. It is this casual cynicism that is driving people out of both parties, and why so many people feel that they have no real choices.
"In 2010 we can vote to increase the power of the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, but we cannot reduce the power of the political class. It is this power that leads to the corruption, greed, nonresponsiveness, and dishonesty that we see in both parties.
"Until we take back power by constitutionally imposing term limits, restricting government spending to a percentage of gross domestic product, cleaning up the voting system, requiring legislative transparency, and eliminating the revolving door of politics, pulling a different colored lever won't change anything."
Ken Beckrich's Common Sense should be a beacon for political candidates of any party who want to be successful. Of course, to follow his advice they will have to first be patriots.
